Chapter 5

Kelley rested her head against Nate’s shoulder. He had his arm around her as they watched sea lions off the pier and looked out on San Francisco Bay. The wind off the bay was biting and his embrace helped to warm her.

The past two months had gone by in a whirlwind. Nate had completely taken her in with his caring, his dominance, and how much he wanted to take care of her.

And that was nice. Nothing else in her life seemed to slow down enough to allow her to take a step back. Demands of the job and of her position of head nurse kept her beyond busy. She had to deal with the mess her ex had left her finances in and she had to solve squabbles between her adult siblings who often didn’t act like adults.

But Nate was always there for her. He gave her advice when she needed it and helped her invest her money in the right places, which was already making it easier to pay off her ex’s debt. She knew Nate would have paid off the debt for her, but she would never allow him to do that. It was her responsibility, and she always took care of her responsibilities.

He made her happy. She loved how he took control and took away having to make decisions when she was away from the other things in her life. He picked out what they ate, what they did, what he liked her to wear, and other things. If she had balked at anything, she knew he would have backed off, but he knew how much she loved it.

The sea lions’ barking brought her attention back to them and she smiled. “Noisy, aren’t they?” she said. “Love watching them.”

He squeezed her shoulders. “Ready for dinner?”

“Mmmm.” She nodded and looked up at him. “I could really go for some clam chowder and sourdough bread.”

“We’ll have crab, too.” He started to guide her away from the pier.

“Sounds wonderful.”

They took the trolley then headed to their hotel room at the St. Francis in Union Square to change into something nicer for dinner than the jeans and shirts they’d been wearing. For her he picked out her emerald green corset, garters, and panties, along with nude stockings to go under the black dress he’d selected.

They had a fantastic dinner along with a couple glasses of wine at a fabulous seafood restaurant on Polk Street.

After chocolate mousse for dessert, Nate covered her hand on the tabletop. “I don’t know what it is about you, but you’ve captured me. I’m completely taken with you.”

Kelley turned her hand up so that they were holding hands. “I feel the same way.”

“I’ve never felt this way with anyone.” His gaze was serious. “I enjoy our time together, our talks, our interests.”

A pleasant warmth filled her belly. “It feels we’ve known each other forever.”

“It was love at first sight.” He searched her gaze. “Now it’s love at the sixty-fifth sight.”

Her whole body was now enveloped in heat.
